What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is an imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to project a visual of your uterus. This visual will show up on a screen that you can see during your appointment. The ultrasound tech will be able to visually confirm the pregnancy, determine how far along you are and whether there is a fetal heartbeat, and ensure the pregnancy is located in the uterus.

What does an ultrasound do?

The goal of an ultrasound is to give you more information that is critical to the decision-making process going forward. First, your ultrasound tech is looking to confirm your pregnancy by locating it and giving you a visual. When it comes to an unplanned pregnancy, you want to be sure that you are actually pregnant and have a viable pregnancy before jumping to any decision.

Your ultrasound tech will then try and detect a heartbeat. Whether or not a heartbeat is detected changes your options going forward. If no heartbeat is found, then it could be too early in the pregnancy to detect or it could be a possibility that you might miscarry.

They will also measure the fetus and compare it to the estimated conception date to determine how far along the pregnancy is, as well as ensuring that the pregnancy implanted in the uterus. If the pregnancy implanted somewhere other than the uterus, like in the Fallopian tubes, it is considered an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies do not allow enough room for the fetus to grow and will not be able to be carried to term.
