How Does a Pregnancy Test Work?
Pregnancy tests detect the presence of the human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) hormone, a hormone associated with pregnancy. You must allow time for your body to build up hCG to detectable levels in order to receive an accurate result. This is why you are more likely to receive a false negative result on a pregnancy test if the test is taken too soon after conception.
During a pregnancy test in our clinic, you will be asked to provide a urine sample. This urine sample will then be tested by one of our trained staff members to detect the presence of hCG. This test only takes a few minutes and you will receive your results during your appointment.
I already took a pregnancy test at home. Do I need to take one in-clinic?
While home pregnancy tests have improved over the years, there are still many factors that could contribute to you receiving an inaccurate result at home. Things that may affect your results are:
- The test is taken too early
- The test is incorrectly administered
- The sensitivity of the pregnancy test
- What medications you are taking
Our tests are 99 percent accurate and administered by our trained staff members. When you may be facing an unplanned pregnancy, you want to know that the result you receive from your pregnancy test is accurate.
What are my next steps?
After a positive pregnancy test in our clinic, an appointment will be scheduled for a free ultrasound by one of our ultrasound technicians. An ultrasound will allow you to confirm the pregnancy, determine how far along the pregnancy is, and ensure that the pregnancy is located in the uterus and is viable.
